“My mom gave me life and I was able to return the gift of life.”

Three years ago, Amy’s mother Vicky was in desperate need of a new kidney. Amy was determined to help save her life and knew in her heart she would be a match.

When Vicky’s kidneys started to fail after years of living with Type 2 diabetes, she knew exactly how hard it would be. Amy's grandfather had the same diagnosis and endured the harsh realities of dialysis. Both Vicky and her daughter Amy knew that dialysis had many limitations to a good quality of life. “I was willing do anything to spare my mom from experiencing what my he did. I was on a mission,” says Amy.

The kidney donor pre-screening process felt long, but Amy says it was very thorough. She underwent extensive examinations over the course of six months to ensure she was both mentally and physically healthy enough to be eligible as her mom’s donor. Despite the lengthy process, Amy shares that her medical team was incredibly compassionate.

“They really took care of me, eased my anxiety, and addressed all of my concerns. Both my mom and I felt quite anxious while waiting for the results, but the support from the medical team made a big difference.”

A new bond between mother and daughter
On April 6, 2021, Amy successfully donated one of her kidneys to her mom at Vancouver General Hospital. “I am filled with immense gratitude and pride knowing that I could return the gift of life to my mom. The bond we have forged through this process is incredibly special and priceless,” Amy remarks.

Amy is now 38 years old, a living kidney donor from Port Moody and the mother of two young boys who keep her engaged and active.

“I feel completely healthy with no adverse effects,” adds Amy. “I resumed my normal activities three months post-donation.”

Amy says the living donation experience has given her a new perspective on life, and now she values and cherishes it in a whole new way. ‘Selfless, brave, and inspirational’ are words her family and friends use to describe Amy’s selfless gift.

As for Amy’s mom, Vicky’s estimated kidney function is now over 90 per cent. She has been able to travel with her husband and spend quality time with her three children and three grandchildren. She is also patiently waiting for one more grandchild on the way.

“I enjoy cooking, reading, walking, hiking and traveling, and most of all I love cooking for my family,” shares Vicky. “I am extremely grateful to my dear daughter for giving me a healthy, vibrant kidney so I can continue cooking special homemade Taiwanese dishes for everyone.”

Amy cherishes the mother-daughter time they get to continue enjoying, such as going for restaurant dates and walks together in Vancouver, where Vicky resides.

“My family spends a significant amount of time in the kitchen and dining room, where cooking and food represent our love language,” explains Amy. “Because of my mom’s kidney transplant, she is able to keep sharing her love through cooking, feeding everyone, including herself, without the need for strict dietary restrictions. She’s 65 now, and quite an amazing woman!”
A special shout out to Amy and Vicky’s healthcare teams
“I cannot express our gratitude enough for the exceptional care and support we received during this journey. The medical teams were among the most kind and compassionate people I have ever encountered. Thank you for who you are and everything you do,” shares Amy.

Vicky often shares the details of her transplant journey with family and friends and now feels hopeful about life. “I am very grateful for the medical care and attention provided by the transplant team.”

Amy advocates for organ donation as a BC Transplant volunteer, sharing her story in hopes of inspiring others to learn about organ donation. Even with a full-time job in business administration at a gaming studio, Amy finds time to spread awareness about organ donation and helps dispel common misconceptions in her community.

“I love connecting with the transplant community and find great inspiration in hearing other people's stories and journeys. Volunteering at events to share my own story and address misconceptions about the transplant process is something I am passionate about. Additionally, I enjoy visiting the hospitals and attending appreciation events to honour the behind-the-scenes medical heroes.”

Her goal is to educate others on the impact of organ donation and encourage more people to consider becoming organ donors.

“I would encourage everyone to explore and educate themselves about the option of living donation, and carefully consider both potential risks and benefits. Being a living kidney donor has brought me immense joy and pride, knowing that I have positively influenced my mom’s life. If I could, I would gladly repeat the experience without hesitation.”
