Who We Are

BC Transplant provides oversight for all aspects of organ donation and transplantation across B.C.
Every year, hundreds of British Columbians receive an organ transplant at one of BC’s three transplant hospitals in Vancouver, thanks to the gift of life from living and deceased organ donors.

BC Transplant (BCT) provides oversight for all aspects of organ donation and transplantation across the province. BCT is a national leader, widely recognized for clinical excellence, innovation and a highly integrated provincial model.

British Columbia has achieved significant, sustained improvement in organ donation and transplantation. In 2010, BC’s deceased donor rate was 10.8 donors per million, well below the national rate. By 2025, this increased to 25.4 donors per million, now consistently exceeding the national average. BC’s living donor rate has also remained higher than the national average. On the transplant side, BC leads in kidney transplants and performs more heart and liver transplants per million population than the national average. Patients in BC also have shorter wait times for deceased donor kidney transplants compared to patients elsewhere. Current statistics are available here.

These achievements reflect years of focused efforts to build a fully integrated provincial model that unites organ donation and transplantation within one highly specialized clinical program, closely aligned with the broader healthcare system.

Vision

All British Columbians have the option to consider organ donation at end-of-life and all British Columbians eligible for a transplant will receive one.

Mission

With compassion, collaboration and innovation, we will save lives and offer hope through organ donation, transplantation and research.
