Susan Sadoway was convinced she had registered as an organ donor many years ago, but turns out she actually hadn't. Susan, a communications professional from Victoria, was one of the first in B.C. to try out the new BC Transplant portal on the Health Gateway app.
"The process for clicking through Health Gateway to the Organ Donor Registry was quick and easy. I was surprised to see I wasn't registered, but I was able to complete my registration and saw my status change in Health Gateway the next time I checked," Susan says.
Launched in May, the partnership between BC Transplant and Health Gateway aims to make viewing your organ donation registration details a simpler process. The new feature allows individuals to check their organ donor registration status and download an actual PDF copy of their completed registration form.
Already, there have been more than 17,000 user clicks on the Organ Donor Registration tile in Health Gateway, and 4,500 users have downloaded their registration form PDF.
Janey Woolls, a Victoria psychology student, is one of them. She shares, "I've always wanted to sign up for organ donation but never got around to it because I wasn't sure how. Health Gateway made it so quick and easy to sign up and now I can feel more at peace knowing that if something ever did happen to me, I might be able to make a difference for someone else."
You only need to register your decision in B.C.'s Organ Donor Registry once in your lifetime. However, it can be challenging to remember the details of your full registration years later. Prior to the Health Gateway portal, the only way you were able to obtain a hard copy of your registration form was by calling BC Transplant and having it mailed to you.
