A cutting edge system 24 years ago, the BC Organ Donor Registry was on its last legs. BC Transplant joined forces with several teams across PHSA and external vendors to revive it.

As announced in February of this year, BC Transplant breathed new life into the provincial Organ Donor Registry thanks to one incredible team and their dedicated partners. Navigating through funding obstacles and tight timelines, the BC Organ Donor Registry Rebuild Project team upgraded the registry to a new system, finished on schedule and introduced significant improvements.

BC Transplant and the PRISM (Provincial Registry Information System) development team quickly built an environment of mutual respect and positivity. Because of their teamwork, they not only tackled the challenges of the project but also dared to dream big rather than settling for the bare minimum by further collaborating with the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) Health Gateway team to enhance the features of the registry and make it more accessible.

“This massive task was completed in record time through a collaborative process that was wonderful to witness from a distance,” said Dr. Sean Keenan, provincial medical director for donation services. “This is truly an awesome accomplishment and I am so grateful to those who made this happen.”

Number of registered organ donors since the ODR was refreshed

Because of the team’s hard work, the number of registered organ donors has continually increased, which means more organs will be available to save the lives of those who need them.

You can save lives by registering to become an organ donor today. For more information, check out the Organ Donation web page.

Congratulations to the Organ Donor Registry Rebuild Project team for their PHSA+ Award!
